Class Enrollment

AMR San Diego offers both the Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider Initial and Renewal courses.

The BLS Healthcare Provider course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course is intended for certified or noncertified, licensed or non-licensed healthcare professionals.

Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider is the highest level of CPR that can be attained through American Heart Association. The other two courses Heartsaver CPR and Friends & Family are not currently offered at AMR.

The Provider course is held over a six hour time period. It is intended for students who do not currently hold a BLS card or who have let their card lapse.

The Renewal course is intended for students who have a current BLS card. This course is only four hours long. A BLS card is considered current through the last day of the month as listed under expiration date (on the front of your card).

During the BLS class, students will be responsible for understanding and completing the following core modules:

• CPR for Adults & Children (1 & 2 rescuer sequences)
• CPR for Infants (1 & 2 rescuer sequences)
• Adult and Child Bag Mask Technique and Rescue Breathing
• Relief of Choking
• Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)

The current version of the BLS Healthcare Provider textbook being used was copyrighted in 2006. It contains 2005 CPR ECC Guidelines. We anticipate that AHA will release a new version of the BLS Healthcare Provider textbook in 2011.


Upon successful completion of the course, each student will receive a two year American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider Card.
